The various versions of DP

Sep 14, 2026

1.0
Released in May 2006. Bandwidth: 10.8 Gbps. The maximum transmission speed of DisplayPort 1.0 is 8.64 Gbit/s, with a length of 2 meters and it has been discontinued.
1.1a
Released in January 2008. DisplayPort 1.1 allows the use of other transmission media (such as optical fiber), increasing the transmission distance, but does not standardize other transmission media. At the same time, HDCP is added to DisplayPort Content Protection (DPCP), and it is rarely used now.
1.2
It was released on December 22, 2009. The biggest change was that the transmission speed increased by two times to 21.6 Gbit/s (High Bit Rate 2 (HBR2) mode), supporting 4K (4096X2160) at 60Hz, thus enabling higher resolution, frame rate and color depth. The Mini DisplayPort designed by Apple is also compatible with this standard. Version 1.2 supports 3D and multi-streaming.
1.2a
On May 12, 2012, the Video Electronics Standards Association announced that DisplayPort 1.2a added the technology "Adaptive-Sync" which allows the display to update at a rate dynamically controlled by the video output port, enabling the display to fully comply with the instructions of the video output port to update the picture.
1.3
On September 15, 2014, the Video Electronics Standards Association released DisplayPort 1.3, with a maximum bandwidth speed of 32.4 Gbps (HBR3), and the effective bandwidth after encoding is 25.92 Gbps. It can support 4K (3840X2160) at 120Hz, 5K (5120X2880) at 60Hz, and 8K (7680X4320) at 30Hz.
1.4
The final version of the DP 1.4 communication port specification for February 2016 is based on the DP 1.3 specification from September 2014. The bandwidth remains the same, but it incorporates Display Stream Compression technology, Forward Error Correction, high dynamic range data packets (HDR meta transport), and the audio channel has been upgraded to 32 channels at a sampling rate of 1536 KHz. This will enable 8K-level (7680x4320) 60Hz output for laptops, smartphones, and AIO all-in-one computers, and up to 120Hz for 4K.
2.0
In 2019, the DisplayPort 2.0 interface protocol was launched. The transmission bandwidth of DP 2.0 is as high as 80 Gbps, which is 2.5 times that of the current DP 1.4 and 1.6 times that of HDMI 2.1. It can output 16K 60Hz (DSC), 10K 60Hz lossless, 4K 240Hz and other images on a single screen, and supports 4K 144Hz lossless on dual screens.
